Meet Your Neighbor: Christine "Chris" Hassett

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Chris lived most of her life across the Big Apple in Howard Beach. She attended Catholic grammar school, public high school and Brown’s Business School in Jamaica, New York. After completing her education, Chris worked for the American Tobacco for 25 years.

When the American Tobacco moved from Park Avenue to Stanford, Connecticut in 1986, so did Chris. The move was not only geographical, but also moved Chris into the world of technology. This is where Chris first learned how to use a computer.

Service has played a large role in Chris' life. She has always been very active in her church and helped weekly at a soup kitchen. She was a member of the Queen Citizens Organization, fighting for rights on the local government level and implementing legislative change. Initially, the movement supported church rights, but also fought for the rights of Latino and African Americans. Chris was determined to better the lives of those in the community.

Hobbies & Other Fun Facts:
Chris was also a lay member of the Secular Franciscan Order. Founded by St. Francis of Assisi, the Secular Franciscans are Living Gospel to Life and Life to Gospel. Gospel to Life means they are to take the teachings of Jesus Christ and apply them to their everyday situations. Not only wondering, what would Jesus do, but demonstrating to fellow man what Jesus did.

Chris’s hobbies include reading and studying the Genealogy of her family tree. She has traced her roots back to Ireland, England and Australia. She continues to volunteer today in the library at the Apartment Community, and has been a cherished resident for 16 years.
